- I began my career in high school and college, developing retail construction estimation software, first in BASIC on early micro-computers, and later in C on IBM PCs, for Contractors Management Systems of Reston, Virginia.
- In college I studied Artificial Intelligence software,
developing research efforts in a range of envionrments from Scheme to
assembler.
- Before attending graduate school in 1987, I developed office automation software in C/UNIX for Computer Consoles Inc. of Reston, Virginia.
- As a graduate student I was an independent software contractor for small businesses in Binghamton, New York.
- I
was an early web pioneer, helping develop Principia Cybernetica as a
distributed, collaborative markup application first in SGML/HyTime,
transitioning to HTML in the early 1990's.
- I have taught C and UNIX at the undergraduate level during this period.
- On arriving at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in 1996, I was lead engineer for a large software development effort in C++ and SQL.
- I remain involved in a range of experimental mathematics
software efforts as a manager, designer, and developer, including
modern efforts in Python, and high performance applications in the
experimental language Chapel.
